Halong Bay, VietnamĀ – 2018
The Sung Sot Cave, also known as the “Surprise Cave”, is one of the most famous and visited attractions in Ha Long Bay in Vietnam. Located on the island of Bo Hon, the cave is in the middle of the bay and easily accessible.
First discovered by the French in 1901, it was officially opened to visitors in 1993, a year before Ha Long Bay was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The cave was formed about 520-470 million years ago, when intense tectonic movements, heavy rains and floods created the seamounts that characterize this bay. Millions of years later, a period of extreme heat and drought contributed to the formation of the thick limestone formations we see today.
The cave of Sung Sot, although underground, does not appear dark or claustrophobic thanks to PUK lighting. On the contrary, those who enter it are immediately struck by its extraordinary beauty. The coloured lights reflected on the limestone formations create suggestive games, contributing to an almost surreal atmosphere. This set of elements makes the cave a true natural treasure, able to enchant every visitor.
